Camshafts

Peak Performance's vast and varied experience with Honda VTEC engines has directly led to the creation of our line of Peak Performance camshafts. Our camshafts are designed to offer a substantial increase in horsepower and torque over the entire RPM range using a precise combination of different professional motorsports inspired designs and profiles. We start with all new castings made using materials sourced from OEM suppliers, based on OEM specifications. We then utilize direct chill-casting technology to ensure a high quality and long lasting cast. The camshafts are then ground using the latest in CNC technology. Each camshaft is ground to exact tolerances utilizing specifications and profiles designed exclusively by our engineers. For budding camshaft designers, we also offer our own direct chill-cast blank cores allowing you to "roll your own" camshaft.

Peak Performance's Wide Lobe Edge
Peak Performance camshafts for Honda VTEC engines employ what we affectionately call, the Wide Lobe Edge. A typical VTEC camshaft employs a set of three cam lobes that correspond to three RPM ranges, which we'll refer to as low, medium and high. During low speed operation, the low RPM lobe and the mid RPM lobes (known as the primary lobes) operate independently. The low RPM lobe keeps the valve lift low on the second valve to produce better low end torque, better emissions, and better fuel economy. In the mid RPM range, an oil pressure solenoid locks the two rocker arms together so that only the mid RPM lobe is doing the work. In the high RPM range, oil pressure locks all three rocker arms, enabling the high RPM lobe (known as the secondary lobe) to actuate the valves with its higher lift, longer duration profile. What Peak Performance has done to further enhance this process is to essentially eliminate the low RPM lobe. To do this, it was necessary to re-engineer the low RPM lobe into, basically, a mid RPM lobe. To do this, it was first necessary to widen the low RPM lobe to be able to handle the stress of higher lift and greater duration. By eliminating the low RPM VTEC range and essentially starting from the mid RPM range, Peak Performance camshafts allow for greater lift and duration from the moment you hit the gas pedal. This also allowed for the creation of a higher lift high RPM lobe. An added benefit of the increased primary lobe lift and duration is that the transition from primary to secondary (high RPM) lobes is less abrupt due to the accelerated rise in horsepower from the primary lobes. The result is a much more aggressive camshaft with an aggressive idle.

Honda CTR/ITR Cam Lobes
OEM Honda Civic Type-R/Integra Type-R Camshaft (notice the skinny, low profile primary lobe on the left)

Benefits:

  • Capable of producing 245 horsepower (Import Tuner) at the wheels from a 2.0 liter Honda VTEC engine
  • Much greater lift and duration than JDM Civic Type-R or Integra Type-R camshafts
  • Smoother transition from primary lobes to secondary lobes, making greater use of Honda's VTEC technology
  • Increased horsepower and torque across the whole RPM range
  • Increased power producing RPM range (higher redline) when used with adequate valve springs

Specifications (Honda B-Series Pro Camshaft):

  • Intake: Duration: 256° @ 0.05in (1.27mm) Lift: 12.8mm
  • Exhaust: Duration: 257° @ 0.05in (1.27mm) Lift: 12.6mm

For Comparison:

  • Honda CTR/ITR camshaft specifications:
    • Intake: Duration: 243° @ 1mm, Lift: 11.5mm
    • Exhaust: Duration: 235° @ 1mm, Lift: 10.5mm
